The microchip sends a low level signal to the receiver in your car. This signal only matches the digital serial number programmed by the manufacturer. This is to stop any unauthorized copying of your car key to ensure that you only start your vehicle.

Mechanical Keys
Modern cars do not make use of mechanical keys. Instead, they utilize an RFID chip inside the key to identify it and communicate with the car's system to start and function. A mechanical key can still open the doors and access the fuel cap but if it's not been programmed to communicate with the car, it won't start.
The system utilizes LF (low frequency 125 milliseconds) transmitting antennas in and outside the vehicle, which communicate with the smart key. If the key is close enough to trigger one of these antennas, it transmits its identification back to the car using RF (radio frequency of 300 MHz or more). The PASE module then validates the key and turns off the immobilizer, allowing for the vehicle to start.
A backup mechanical method is also available in the event that the battery in the smart key runs down or fails. For aesthetic reasons, a lot of manufacturers hide the mechanical blade behind the cover. In addition, all cars with a smart-key system include an emergency starting mechanism that involves placing the dead key fob into an opening or keeping it near an area of the dashboard, which will charge it electrically using inductive charging.
