Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the first half of its existence, the company made products to meet the demand for modern and contemporary urban housing. It used the first tunnel kilns in the country to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production,

The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s in order to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and distributing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own range of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the company's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its emphasis on research and development for household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve customers and boost profits. The company used the same approach of just-in-time in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of satisfaction of customers.
Toto continues to invent toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for example it has a powerful tornado flush that is more environmentally green than traditional toilets. The company uses recycled water in its manufacturing process, and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also manufactures faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The company's first museum opened in the year 2015, and it has exhibitions on Toto's seminal products and their development as well as its group companies (all related to ceramics) and the history of plumbing and other products like bath units and, in a separate gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum even has a bathroom that features the WASHLET toilet, as well as other toilet-related innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group performed sessions for a variety of musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro, and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also performed on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.

The album closes with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distorted AOR and should sound like a complete flop, but is incredibly effective.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes started to plummet. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career, and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the group due to drug charges. The band continued to play with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Despite the chaos, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation that was not as successful as IV. The band managed to release an album that was chart-topping, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.
