The country is home to small farm families who have joined together to form cooperatives. This has allowed them to benefit from fair trade prices and sell their beans directly. Small farms are also aided by the use of ecological methods to reduce the environmental impact on their coffee production.

The Ketiara Co-op helps to preserve the biodiversity of Leuser National Park surrounding it by using shade-grown agriculture to preserve the ecosystem.
In a region renowned for its volcanic soil it's no surprise that the fertile ground is ideal for coffee cultivation. However, this natural resource is threatened by the influx of foreign coffee growers that have dominated the coffee industry. Many local farmers are not able to compete with the costs of these giant corporations and have been forced off their land.
In the absence of direct trade, on average $0.15 of every $3 cup of coffee is paid to the farmer. Fair trade is important because this system must be altered. By establishing direct trading relationships, farmers can create income security that can eliminate the drastic fluctuations in demand from season to season.
