Door handles are not only essential for aesthetics of your home, but they're essential for security as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle can begin to lose its grip or feel loose. It might also begin to look worn out and old. This is an indication that it's time for a

One of the first signs that your door handle requires
replacing window handles is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a problem since it means you can no longer lock or unlock your door which could be an security risk to you and your family.
Another reason to replace your door handle is when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, particularly for children and elderly family members who struggle to open it. They could become trapped. Luckily, it's quite easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Most modern door handles are standard size, so they are suitable for any door. If you are not sure if your new door handle will work, take out the old one and measure its housing holes. This will let you purchase the correct size door handle.
It is easiest to remove the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. This is typically done with a screw driver. Some door handles have an enclosure plate that hides the screws used to mount them. It is necessary to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. After you've removed the old handle, make a note of how the spindle is attached so that you can be sure to align it when you install your new one.
Alternatively, you can remove the door handle by removing it from the latch mechanism. This is usually done with the screwdriver, but you'll need to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, you'll need to unscrew the handle from the strike plate and then the latch off the door's edge.
Remove the Strike Plate
When replacing the handle, you'll need to replace the latch plate that holds the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The box that the new handles arrive in will have two options for latch plates: either a rectangular or a circular one (see the diagram above detailing door handle parts). If you have an rectangular latch plate, you can replace it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier to use.
The first step is to loosen the screw that is holding the latch plate that was previously in place. The screws are typically tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If you can, it might be beneficial to have a second person help with this process.
The latch plate should easily lift itself out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move use a small file to scrape the edges. This can sometimes open the plate.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Install the latch plate in the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with your new handles. Do not overtighten your screws as this could damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in its proper position, shut and then open the door to check whether it latches and closes properly. If it doesn't, you'll need to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or forward or back, until the door closes and latches correctly.
If the door is still moving or jiggles, then you may have to enlarge your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent for older doors, but could also be caused by wear and tear, hinge mortises that are not deep enough or not the right size for the latch, or because of damage or a broken strike plate. If this is the situation, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Removal of the Latch
The latch is a bent metal piece that slides into and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch moves forward when you turn the handle. It also catches a hole on the door frame so that the door stays closed. If your door shakes when you close it, replacing the latch might be all that's needed to correct the issue.
The screws that secure the door latch are hard to spot however, you can use a screwdriver to make an insignificant hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle in position.
If the latch is not easily removed using a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the latch's slot that is recessed and gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. It may take this several times before the latch is loose enough to let it out.
Once the old latch is removed, you should be able to slide the new latch into the slot without issues. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and is aligned with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to attach it to the strike plate and door frame.
Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your existing backset (the distance from the centre of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). You should also check that the size of the latch on the new handle matches the measurement of your existing handle.
If you are replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if the old lock cylinder is damaged, then you will need a new one. If you're not changing locks however, a new latch will fit in your existing recess and will work just fine with your current keys. Pick a latch that has rectangular cover plates that match your existing handles.
Then remove the Cover Plate
You can replace your old door handles with a modern rose and lever designs to make a difference in the appearance of your house. You can buy complete sets with matching escutcheons, privacy adaptors and escutcheons.
The first step to replace an internal door handle is to remove the cover plate or rose, which hides the screws and the mechanism within. Look for an opening tab on the plate, and employ a flathead screwdriver pop it off the knob. It could have a slot along one edge or be held in place by a pin.
Remove the screw that holds the handle in the interior and set it aside once the cover plate is removed. Remove the screws that secure both the outer and inner plates. You can loosen them using a Philips Screwdriver. Take the inner plates and latch from the door. Place them aside.
Most doors have gaps between the jamb of the door and the edge of the frame that makes room for a handle, but not all do. If yours does not then you'll have to make a hole in the door to install the new handle. The procedure to do this is the same as for opening a door with the lock, however you'll be taking extra care not to damage the door or frame.
The installation of new door knob screws is necessary after the holes have been drilled. Purchase the same dimensions as your old screws to ensure that you don't get a handle too tight or loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also necessary. These aren't included in all door handle sets.
