What is a bedside cot?
A bedside crib, also referred to as a bassinet, or co-sleeper, is a small crib for babies that is attached to your adult bed. This allows your child to sleep right next to you in peace. This is a secure form of co-sleeping and doesn't increase your risk of SIDS like bedsharing. It also helps you bond with the new baby.
They usually come with a side that can be adjusted so that you can easily reach your infant throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly beneficial for mothers who are recovering from a c-section. Many are portable or foldable which means you can use them for travel and as an interim solution for babies who aren't quite ready to transition into a crib that is large enough.
If you're looking for a crib to sleep in, look for a model with a comfortable mattress and a cover to protect your newborn from the stains. You may also want to purchase some baby-safe accessories like an infant blanket or a teether.
If you are looking for a longer-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you convert them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is right. This will prolong their life and make the transition smoother. Some have a removable section at the top that can be turned into the bassinet. Other models can be used in conjunction with a standard adult bed or a high-rise model. This is a great option for families that plan on frequently traveling or switching rooms during the night. It is also important to consider the size of your room to ensure that you can squeeze the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with a riser which can be used to create an inclined position for babies who suffer from reflux.
