Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or for jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.
If you're looking for a smooth ride with your baby, opt for models with 360deg front wheels that swivel. However, they are susceptible to punctures, so be prepared with an repair kit.
Sturdy frame
New figures show that the three-wheeled buggies that were the emblem of the noughties, which had more money than common sense, are in a steep decline. They've been replaced with four-wheelers which can handle a wider variety of terrain, while also looking swanky and being easy to push.
The bigger the wheels are, the more your buggy will be able to deal with bumpy surfaces and uneven pavements. The larger wheels, both front and rear, make it easier to maneuver and more stable while walking downhill or in difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a
3 wheeled pushchairs year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath wrote "it feels sturdy to push and very solid when going over difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) offer built-in suspension which was extremely comfortable for my kids.
The shape and size of the seat is another thing to consider. You'll want it to be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort and you will also need it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies have the option of lying flat that lets your child face you, while others only allow a face-to-parent one.
The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or walking in muddy areas. It can be used as a single unit from birth, and then expands to accommodate two children as your family grows. It is suitable for babies and toddlers until age four and comes with a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness and large cushioned seat unit. Storage options are also good, with a large basket, zip pockets on the hood, and a handy pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Wheels with a larger diameter
Larger wheels mean that your buggy will be more stable on rough terrain - ideal for off-road buggies. They also allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. A lot of three-wheeled buggies come with the front wheels that swivel to aid you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are specifically designed for running and have fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability with which they can be pushed. This can also help if you bump into the roots of a tree or stray kerb as the front wheel will lift up slightly to prevent you from hitting it.
Many
3 wheel pushchairs feature air-filled tyres. This means they can be used on different terrains and are more flexible than 4-wheeler. They are also lighter. They are also more susceptible to punctures, so you will need to have an repair kit and spare inner tubes on hand.
Our top 3-wheelers include the Mountain Buggy Core and Venicci Carbo Lux. Both buggies feature larger wheels that, according to MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on gravel tracks, grass and market town cobbles" and are able to easily go up and down kerbs. The buggies also come with suspension that Kath says "smooths out bumps very effectively".
The drawback of having larger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be a problem if you use it for jogging, or need to fit through narrow doorways while on the move. Fortunately, the majority of models come with compact folding options that allow you to remove the front wheels to make compact storage.
Easy to manoeuvre
A three-wheel buggy can be more comfortable to drive with a child. They are designed so that the front wheels turn on a dime, and are easy to navigate, making them ideal for difficult terrain like cobblestones, parks as well as bumpy roads and dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tried a 3-wheeler with her toddler, and she said: "The Terrain is a pleasure to drive on rough terrain. The front swivel wheel was especially helpful." I was also impressed by how well it dealt with bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable for descending or on a rough terrain."
The only drawback to this incredible mobility is that the
3 wheel pushchair travel system wheel buggy's larger wheels sometimes mean that it can be difficult to maneuver in tight spaces - something to keep in mind if you live in a metropolitan region. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeled buggy could be the better option for you.
Bumper bar
Bumper bars are a great method to protect your child from scrapes and bumps when out and out and about. They are easy to install, and will make your child feel safe and secure out and out and about.

The sling is stowed within the frame and not on top of the modular seat. This provides a lower center of gravity for your baby at the ideal height, and also delivers great weight distribution, making it easier to climb over curbs (it is much easier to push a stroller up and over than you may think). MFM reviewer Kath said it's ideal on cobbles and grass. It's also a great option for running with its air-filled tyres as well as a the lockable swivel wheel.

The clever design of the Sport places the sling seat made of fabric inside the frame, instead of sitting on top as modular seats. This allows it to have a lower center of gravity, which means it is easier to push, has a lighter curb-pop (you will not need to put in the same effort to raise the buggy's hood over the curb) and also provides greater stability and balance. Kath who was our MFM reviewer, also adored the roominess of this buggy. There's an easily accessible, large basket that is surprising spacious for a vehicle of this size. There's also an excellent pouch on the back seat unit, and 2 smaller mesh pockets underneath the hood, where you can keep your keys and phone.
