Upgrades will cost more depending on the level of the item however, they are always cheaper than purchasing new gear. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to ilvl 385 will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that can be used to upgrade weapons, tools, armor, and other items. They can be purchased by players through NPCs who sell upgrades to item owners for various currencies. They are also available on random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be used on any weapon, tool or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next upgrade level, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading varies based on the item slot, and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than bracers, or gloves. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item upgrades has been upgraded to a certain amount it can be re-downgraded and sold to the upgrader for a lower price.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places on the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount and the chance to acquire a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases as more items are upgraded. It can also be increased by having players finish certain achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs that can assist with upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a benefit as well as a disadvantage.

The first thing to remember is that crests are only available for equipment that is of a particular rank. Each rank comes with an upgrade path that is different. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade could require as much as 20 crests, depending on the type or gear that is being upgraded.

Players can obtain crests by working through content that is of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, dungeons or raids of all difficulty for items of higher tier, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for endgame gear. These crests can then be exchanged at an upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken to obtain the appropriate upgrade paths and steps.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, however it does bring some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic), it won't need Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade their gear to the highest possible level for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests with care, since they only have one use. It is best to use your Whelpling-rank Crests on the highest-quality gear that you can find, and save Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that take up several slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all the slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
