Before Toto was formed, members of the band did session work for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session drummer Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 as a result of the collaboration.
Turn Back, Toto's third studio album, was criticized by critics for lacking hit singles. In 1985 the group's singer Fergie Fredericksen resigned the group, and they held auditions to find a replacement frontman. Guitarist Steve Lukather was chosen, and the band recorded the 1986 album Fahrenheit.
In 1998, Toto celebrated its 20th anniversary by re-discovering old demos and tapes to release a special edition called Toto XX. The album was well-received by fans and Toto embarked on an extensive tour with former members Bobby Kimball Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams.
During the tour for the album 40 Trips Around the Sun the drummer Leland Sklar departed from the group and was replaced by Shem von Schroeck. In 2017, Toto released the double-CD set Falling in Between. It included live recordings from the tour and also an interview with the group.

The track "Africa" is from the album Toto IV. The song was written by band members and produced by David Paich. It was a huge hit in Europe and a variety of other countries. In 1998, Toto started working on a project entitled Old Is New. The album featured three brand new tracks as well as several finished recordings of old songs. The album was a huge success all over the world and the band went on a world tour to promote it.

The album, released on the 6th of November, 2018 included three brand new tracks from the upcoming 40 Trips Around the Sun as also completed recordings of four tracks from the past with Jeff Porcaro playing drums and Mike or Steve Porcaro playing bass. The album also featured the cover of Weezer's track "Hash Pipe" which the band opted to add after hearing a version on the radio.
