There are several types of hinges to choose from, each with unique characteristics. This article will discuss some of the most common uPVC hinges and their benefits.
Egress/Easy Clean Hinge
They are a great choice for replacing or upgrading windows for fire escapes since they open at a full 90-degree angle. They can be removed to an easy-clean position, allowing you to access the windows' exterior without having to climb ladders or lean at dangerous angles.
These heavy-duty egress hinges are made by Yale which is among the most popular and trusted home security brands available today. These hinges are compatible with any type of uPVC side-hung windows. By pressing a tiny button, the window sash will be moved to the side and into the position that is easy to clean. After closing, the window sash will return to its original position.
Both 13mm and 17mm sizes are available. Make use of our Egress Selection Guide to help you select the best product for your
double glazed window hinge repair.
These hinges can be used with standard side-hung frames made of uPVC, or aluminium. The friction screw is used to adjust the resistance. This makes opening the window simpler and less likely of closing the window accidentally during high winds. They have been tested for more than thirty thousand cycles, and they are compliant with British Standards approved BS EN 130126-6:2008 and BBA/Secured by Design.
The Nico Egress Easy Clean friction hinge is easy to operate and doesn't have any buttons or catch. It provides a convenient and secure solution to emergency exit and cleaning. First, open the window to the egress (full opening) position, then press the hinge retaining clip that is located on the inner side of the bottom corner. This will release both the catches on the top and bottom and allow you to move the sash into the easy-cleaning position. Once it is in the easy-clean position, close the window to reset the hinges to their egress position.
Fire-Escape Hinge
Fire Escape Hinges (also known as "Easy Clean") are used to replace side-opening windows to ensure fire safety. These types of window hinges are more spacious and more efficient than conventional hinges to provide a large clear opening to escape in the event of an incident of fire. This type of hinge is required in any room that has a window, as required by building regulations.
They feature a unique friction stay that allows the window to open at an angle of 90 degrees. It also allows the sash opening to slide across the glass when it is open to make it easy to clean the exterior side of the glass without having to climb ladders. The hinges do not have buttons or catches and are operated by a simple, safe lever that is accessible from the inside of your home.
The hinges are produced in the UK by Cotswold and come with a child safety restraint for day-to-day use that can be overridden with a hidden button, giving you peace of mind that your children won't accidentally open the window too far. The stack heights are 13mm or 17mm.
Take a measurement of the length of the existing side-hung window hinge that is fixed to the frame. (See the guide for measuring upvc window hinges). Choose the right size hinge from the list below.
Please note that the measurement is taken from the part that fixes to the frame, not the sash. The real hinge length may be slightly longer or shorter depending on the manufacturing process of your old windows. When deciding the width of the hinge the majority of frames made of upvc can accommodate with a height of 13mm, but if your old window frame is 17mm, choose this option. You can also opt for the 4mm packer to make up the difference. All hinges are supplied handed (1 left and one right). Screws are not included with the hinges. These can be bought separately if you require. Our window repair screws made of upvc are recommended. These screws are designed to improve the performance of your hinges and allow them to work effortlessly for a longer. They feature a less friction design, and an improved weather seal that is fitted with a new nylon reducer end cap.
Restricted Hinge
Standard hinges can make it difficult to open a window completely. These child safety friction hinges are an excellent solution to this problem. They can be used in situations where ventilation is needed but escaping or cleaning a fire is not possible. They limit the possibility of opening the sash, and allow overriding this limitation by pressing the button. They are suitable for both side- and top-hung
casement windows hinges and are available in 17mm and 13mm stack heights.
The Nico Restricted Egress Hinges combine the advantages of a standard restrictor, and a fire escape pivot to provide a simple but effective way to comply with building regulations. It is available in 13mm or 17mm stack heights and is suitable for the top and side openings of uPVC window. It is offered as a pair of hinges where one hinge is restricted egress and the second is free, allowing one to be fitted to the bottom of the sash while the other hinge is installed to the top.
These uPVC restricting hinges have been tested to BS6375 Part 2 and are designed for use on a window that isn't able to be fully opened, like a small child's bedroom. The mechanism limits the extent to which the sash is able to open to 100mm for safety and then re-engages when the window is closed.
Like the other kinds of
uPVC friction hinges they can be installed on any type of window and are ideal for those hard to reach windows above the ground, three-storey flats or those that typically require a ladder to access them. They can be combined by our security enhancements such as hinge guard protection plates or dog bolts for PAS 24 performance.
When replacing a window hinge, it is crucial to measure the length of the existing hinge so you can purchase replacements that are similar in size. The easiest way to do this is to look at the hinge in the image gallery and working out where you want it to be placed. Top hung hinges are restricted on both sides and the side-hung hinges are only restricted on one side.
Standard Hinge
A standard hinge is made of metal-to-metal contact and no extra components to reduce friction. It's available in a range of finishes and is also fire rated. For a quick way to determine the radius of your hinge lay it flat and line up with a quarter and dime in two corners. If the quarter is more snug, then the corner should be turned to 5/8 inches.
The right hinge can make or break your door's appearance. The design and style of your hinges to your door will create an attractive and cohesive design.
