Choosing
Upvc Window Replacement HingesIt's not as difficult as it might appear to choose and install Upvc replacement hinges. It is important to check the arrow on the hinges are facing in the correct direction and also the thickness (13mm or 17mm) of the hinge arm on the open frame.
There are a few different kinds of hinges that you can pick from, each with unique features. This article will focus on the most common types of uPVC
window hinges, and their benefits.
Egress/Easy Clean Hinge
These windows are an excellent choice to replace or upgrade your fire escape safety windows as they open to a full 90 degree angle. They can be closed to a 'easy-clean' position that allows you to see the windows' exterior without having to climb ladders or lean at risky angles.
These heavy-duty egress hinges are made by Yale, one of the most well-known and respected home security brands available today. These hinges are suitable for any kind of uPVC side hung window. They can be moved into the easy-clean position by pressing the small button and sliding the window sash to one side. After closing, the sash will automatically reset to its original operative position.
They are available in both 13mm and 17mm stack heights. Use our Egress Selection Guide to help you select the best product for your window.
These hinges can be fitted to traditional side-hung frames made from aluminum or uPVC. The friction screw is used to adjust the resistance. This allows for easier opening of the window and reduces the risk of an accidental closure during strong winds. They have been cycle tested to more than 30000 cycles and are in compliance with BBA/Secured by Design and British Standards approved BS EN 13126-6:2008.
The Nico Egress Easy Clean friction hinge is easy to use and doesn't have any buttons or catches. It provides a convenient and safe solution for emergency exits and cleaning. First, open the
door hinges repair to the egress (full opening) position, then press the hinge retaining clip that is located on the inner side of the bottom corner. This will open both the top and bottom catches and allow you to slide the sash to the clean position. Once in the easy-clean position close the window to return the hinges to their original position.
Fire-Escape
hinge repair plateFire Escape Hinges commonly referred to as "Easy Clean" hinges are used to replace side opening windows to allow escape (fire safety) reasons. These types of window hinges are more spacious and more efficient than conventional hinges to provide an open space for escape in the event of an incident of fire. The building regulations state that this kind of hinge must be installed in any habitable space with windows.
They have an exclusive friction stopper that allows the window to be opened to a 90 degree angle and also allows the sash opening to slide across the glass when it is open to make it easy to clean the exterior side of the glass, without having to use ladders. The hinges have no fiddly catch or buttons and operate with an easy, secure lever that can be accessed from inside the home.
The hinges are manufactured in the UK by Cotswold and come with a child safety restrictor for use throughout the day that can be overridden by a hidden button, providing you with peace of mind that your children will not accidentally open the window too far. The stack heights are 13mm or 17mm.
To order these hinges, simply take a measurement of the length of your current side-hung window hinge that attaches to the frame (see the article on measuring the length of your window hinges made of upvc). Choose the right size hinge from the list below.
Please note that this measurement is taken from the hinge's point that attaches to the frame, not the sash. The actual length of the hinge can be longer or shorter depending on the way your old windows were manufactured. Also, when selecting the size of your hinge, the majority of upvc windows can be fitted with a 13mm stack height but should your old frame have 17mm then choose the option for this. You can also use the 4mm packer in order to make up the difference. All hinges come handed (1 left and one right). The hinges do not include screws. If required, these can be purchased separately. Our window repair screws made of upvc are highly recommended. These screws are designed to improve your hinges' performance and allow them work efficiently for a longer. They have a reduced-friction design and a heightened weather seal that includes an encapsulated nylon reducer cap.
Restricted Hinge
There are occasions when
casement windows hinges must fully open and this can be a problem with a standard hinge. These child safety friction hinges are a great way to solve this problem. They can be used in situations where ventilation is needed but cleaning or escape from a fire is not feasible. They work by restricting the amount the sash can open and allow the override of this restriction with an option. They work with both side and top-hung windows. They are available in 17mm and 13mm stack heights.
The Nico Restricted Egress Friction Hinge blends the features of a standard restrictor as well as an escape hinge to offer an effective and simple way to meet building regulations. It is suitable for side-hung and top opening uPVC windows and comes in 17mm and 13mm stack heights. It comes in two pieces, with one hinge being the restricted egress, and the other being the unrestricted. This lets one hinge be installed at the bottom and the other hinge is placed on top.
These uPVC restricting hinges have been tested to BS6375, part 2. They are intended to be used on windows that cannot be opened fully like a small children's bedroom. The mechanism restricts how far the sash opens to an appropriate height of 100mm and then it re-engages after the window is shut.
As with the other types of uPVC friction hinges they can be installed on all types of windows and are suitable for difficult to reach windows above the ground level, three-storey flats or those that would normally require a ladder for access to them. They can be paired with our range of security enhancements such as hinge guards and protection plates, or dog bolts to provide PAS 24 performance.
It is important to measure the hinges on your window to be able to find replacements that are the same size. The easiest method to accomplish this is by looking at the hinge in the gallery and determining the location you would like it to be. Top hung hinges can be restricted on both sides, while side hung hinges are restricted only on one side.
Standard Hinge
A standard hinge uses metal-to-metal contacts and has no additional parts to decrease friction. It's available in a range of finishes, and is fire-rated. To quickly determine the radius of hinges, lay them out flat and place a quarter and dime in two corners. If the dime fits better and the corner is round by 1/4 inch; if the quarter fit better, it's rounded to 5/8 inch.
The proper hinge can enhance or ruin the appearance of your door. It's essential to match the style and finish of your door with its hinges for a cohesive look that's both functional and visually attractive.
