Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album it was an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's work was sharper, more intricate and less cloned previously recorded performances.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam that was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album a few months later, and went on a world tour help promote the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to find songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 as a duo album titled Then and Now. It was the first album in the band's history not to include a single song with the word "A" in the title, and it also contained one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious case of laryngitis that limited his singing abilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming duties were replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the group could be reformed. The lineup, which was minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
