It's also an excellent idea to replace the handle on your door when it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be very dangerous, especially in the event that your children or senior family members are unable to open it and end up trapped within. It's easy to fix a damaged handle on doors.

Modern door handles are usually standard sizes and should fit any door. If you're not sure whether the new door handle you're buying will fit, try taking out the old one and measuring its housing holes. This will let you purchase the right size door handle.

It is the easiest method to remove the old door handle by removing it from the door. This is usually done with the screw driver. Some door handles have a cover plate which hides the screws that mount them. You will need to remove this to get to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, take a note of how the spindle is connected to ensure that you can be sure to align it when you install the new one.

Alternately, you can take off your door handle by unscrewing it from the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. However, you will have to locate the small latch which is located on the edge trim piece. After removing the latch, unscrew the handle and strike plate. Then, remove the latch from the edge of the door.

Take off the Strike Plate

You'll need to replace your latch plate when you replace the handle. This is the plate that holds the hole through which the latch for the door is inserted when the door is closed. The new handles will have two latch plates that are circular and rectangular plate (see the above diagram which shows the various parts of the door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, swap it with a round one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate, making the handle easier to use.

The first step is to unhook the screw that is holding the old latch plate. The screws can be very tight, and will require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be helpful to have another person assist you with this task.

The latch plate should easily come out of the door once the screws have been removed. If the latch plate is stuck or won't move, use a small file to scrape the edges. This may help free the plate.

Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate for installation. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that came with the new handles. Be cautious not to tighten too much the screws, as this may damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure whether the latch plate is in the correct position, try closing and then opening the door to check whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't you'll need to adjust the strike plate either up or down, or forward or back until the door closes and latches correctly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent on older doors. It can be caused by wear and tear hinges that are too narrow, the wrong size latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the situation you can use a metal file instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Eliminating the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes the latch forward and allows you to open the door. It also connects to an opening in the frame of the door to keep the door shut. If your door wobbles when you close, replacing the latch could be all that is needed to correct the issue.

The screws that secure the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you will be able to pull off the latch and the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle that holds it.

If the latch won't release it is suggested to use a paper clip or a tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed, and gently twist it or jiggle until the that the latch and handle begin to separate. You may have to do this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.

Once the old latch is removed it should be possible to move the new latch into the slot without any problems. Make use of the new screws to attach the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure it is correctly placed in the slot, and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front surface of the door to the edge). You should also check that the latch size on the new handle is in line with the measurement of your existing handle for patio door.

You'll require a new lock cylinder if you're replacing the handle and latch or your existing one is damaged. If you are not changing locks the new lock will fit into your existing recess and work with the keys you have already. Choose a latch that has rectangular cover plates to match the handles you have.

Once the cover plate is off take off the screw that holds the inside handle in place and set it aside. Remove the screws that secure both the inner and outer plates. You can loosen them by using a Philips Screwdriver. Remove the inner plates and latch from the door. Place them aside.

Most doors have a gap between the door jamb and the inner edge of the frame, which allows for a handle, but not all do. If yours does not, you will need to drill a new hole into the door. The procedure to do this is similar to the procedure opening a door using a lock, but you'll be taking extra care not to damage the door or frame.

The installation of new door knob screws is necessary after the holes have been made. Choose the same size as your old screws to prevent getting the handle too tight or loose. Installing a new latch and strike rod is also mandatory. These are not included in the majority of door handle sets.
