Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is a return to a traditional sextet style, and an even more consistent and powerful effort with a harder edge. The more edgy sound of the album was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work also was sharper, more intricate and less cloned on previous performances.

After touring to promote their album, the band recorded an Amsterdam live show that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set titled Falling In Between. A new studio album followed shortly after, and the group went on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
