How to Replace an replacement audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

jaguar-logo.pngIn this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies to trigger the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of a chain stretch or a jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky because there are two connector pins and they perform different functions however the best way to test it is to measure the resistance between the sensor and the ECU. If the sensor is operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, audi car key cover and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you encounter a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you experience any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is that they are very cheap and easy to find particularly in the case of the Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A faulty engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your new audi keys because it relays information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. If the sensor fails, it could disrupt the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located near the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. It transmits an electrical signal through an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This is a typical component across the Audi Tt Key Case 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC through the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU, so the best ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
