Which
Lightweight Double Pushchair Should You Buy?
It's easy to move around in a lightweight double pushchair, especially if you have kids of different age groups. They're generally easy to fold, steer and carry up and down the stairs.
This City Mini GT2 features side-by-side seating with plenty of legroom. It also features adjustable reclining, large UPF 50+ canopy, and peekaboo windows. It also comes with a smart frame that expands widthways to accommodate a second seat, and also a compatible car seat(s).
Side-by-Side
The majority of the light double pushchairs we tried were side-by-side models. They are ideal for children who can sit without assistance, since they tend to lack compatibility with car seats. The Thule Urban Glide 2 Double and the Baby Trend Sit 'N Stand Double, are both excellent choices. They have recline adjustments for both seats, a large canopy, and padded 5-point safety harnesses. They're also easy to move despite their larger footprint and are perfect for parents worried about fitting through doors.
The Cybex Duet is a little different due to its clever frame that expands widthways to add another seat, which makes it lighter than most other side-by-side pushchairs on the market. This means it fits through standard doorways and is easy to maneuver on public transportation. It is also a jogger, which is ideal for those who plan to use it in conjunction with an infant car seat or a baby carrier.
The UPPAbaby Vista v2 double is another great side-by-side, lightweight double. It offers an even greater degree of customization due to a modular frame. It's a clever design that allows you to convert it into a single stroller or a double by adding two car seats or carrycots (it can even accommodate twins). It's a great option for families that are growing. The umbrella stroller UPPAbaby is one of the lightest, most fashionable and stylish
strollers double available.
If you're looking for a more compact and lightweight double, you can try the egg2 that folds down to the size of a tiny suitcase. It can be used as a single or double with the addition of 2 carrycots or infant car seats, and our home testers loved how sleek and simple it was to carry even when stuffed with kids.
Side-by-side lightweight double pushchairs aren't foolproof, though -If your children are at the same age or stage they may still fight over who is allowed to ride in which seat. And if they're different heights, a tandem style might be better for them as it will allow them to confront each other.
Tandem
While side-by-side models are more suitable for siblings with similar ages, tandem lightweight double pushchairs are a different kind of pushchair with their own appeal. They can be fitted with a larger car seat, and some come with reversible seats or an extra carrycot in the middle. They are bigger and are easier to get into and out of. However the baskets they use tend to be smaller than the ones found on single buggies. They also have larger sized canopies with peekaboo windows, as well as one cup holder for parents and padding for the legs of children.
The iCandy Peach is another example of a good-value lightweight tandem. The fabric is a bit less luxurious than those of some of our top-rated doubles. However, it looks fantastic and is simple to use. One of the most impressive things about it is its one-handed fold. While it will require some practice, Kirstie in our Lab declared it to be "genius". The carrycot is not foldable when it is attached. However, the process to attach and remove the carrycot is simple and quick.
Tandem lightweight double pushchairs will typically make tighter turns than side-by-side models but they can be more difficult to drive over bumps and uneven surfaces. They can also be slightly slower to pick up speed and can be heavier to move, which could result in strain on your back.
Another alternative is a convertible double buggy which starts off as one-person, but you can add adapters to make it into a double. It can have a second seat or carrycot in front or children can sit side-by-side. Some can also consider adding a buggyboard, which can help an older child keep pace with a younger brother or sister.
The Uppababy Vista V2 is a good example of a convertible since it can be converted into a twin pram with the purchase of additional cocoons (PS59 each) that provide a flat space for infants. They can be positioned on top of each other or positioned to each other's faces, and you can use them with the infant car seat that is included with the pushchair (as as long as you choose an appropriate one). These buggies with dual-use capabilities are made of quality materials and can be used for many years without showing any wear. This means they come with the highest resale value.
Single-to-Double
Designed for outdoor-loving families who are looking to upgrade their single stroller, this lightweight double buggy can be converted into a jogger thanks to an impressive kit that comes with air-filled tyres, as well as all-wheel suspension. It's also a great choice for twins, or children from different age groups and as triple tandem, it can take on rough terrain. It's also a good choice for parents who want an elegant design that's as sleek as a single, and comes in a variety of colors for the fabric.
We loved the way this iCandy model folds up with a one-handed mechanism that's really easy to master. It's also heavier than some of the other pushchairs that are single-to-double in this review, home tester Karolina said that it still feels extremely maneuverable, even with two toddlers and a carrycot.
You can buy add-ons like the Roma Gemini Carrycots (PS100) which are great for babies. Our test panel found the seats to be comfortable for toddlers and had good lumbar support and headrests. There are many options for reclining the seats with the front seat adjustable in various positions and the back seat also having an option to recline.
The biggest drawback with this kind of buggy is that it's generally larger overall than doubles that are side-by-side, which makes it harder to navigate through doorways and can be difficult to maneuver around kerbs. However the suspension and wheels on these models generally are capable of coping with paved surfaces and the fact that they're lighter than the side-by-sides means you can still find plenty of storage space. It's important to remember that these strollers aren't as adept at getting through narrow aisles in supermarkets, and may struggle to handle a lot of shopping. Although it's easier to turn the stroller on a small curved path, it can be a problem. Some are more easy to turn than other, such as the Thule Urban Glide 2 Double or the Baby Trend
sit and stand double stroller N' Stand Double.
Convertible
Convertible double pushchairs are ideal because they are able to be adapted to the changing requirements of the family. They are typically single buggies, and come with adapters to add an additional seat, carrycot or (in certain instances) the car seat to the frame. Some even convert to a single as your child gets older and starts to walk more or prefers to ride on a buggy board.
One of the lightest double
strollers double on our list, this sleek tri-fold model can carry children as heavy as 40 pounds each. It also has an easy-to-use basket between the seats to store things. Home testers appreciated its spacious canopy that has windows that can be seen from the outside, multi-position reclining seats and front and rear suspensions to ensure smoother rides on rough terrain. It also has an easy-to-use cup holder for parents as well as an enormous accessible, easily accessible basket. The backs of the bags have small pockets that are just large enough to hold a phone and a set of keys.
This top-of-the-line, lightweight side-byside can be used in more than 20 different configurations and includes two seats and a carrycot. Its impressive feature set includes a high-profile handlebar for easier steering as well as rear and front suspensions to smooth rough terrain; a self-standing, compact fold with handy straps for easy schlepping and seven-inch swing lock front wheels and 10-inch rear wheels with suspension for a smoother ride. The only downside is that you will need to purchase a separate car seat or baby carrier.
This versatile tandem is a popular choice by our home testers due to its maneuverability and large shopping basket, which is accessible with both seats facing towards the parent. Its surprisingly light weight (about the same as some single pushchairs) makes it a breeze to move. Its reversible seats mean that they can be switched to face either way, and the clever method by which it can attach the second seat or riding board to the rear is highly praised by many. Parents also liked the fact that it could accommodate infant carriers and car seats from various brands, including those that aren't typically fit in other double buggies.
