Choosing a Double Pram and Pushchair
A well-designed double pram or pushchair can simplify life for families, particularly when walking on busy roads or in shops and stores. Pick a model with plenty of storage space to store nappies as well as snacks and other necessities.
Some first-time parents choose a pushchair that is future-proof and can be used both as a single stroller when baby is born, and changed to a twin mode after the baby arrives. Joolz offers a range of choices.
Tandem
The news that you're about to have to have a baby is among the most exciting times in life. After the excitement wears off and the reality of the situation begins to set in, you will be faced with many decisions regarding how to prepare your family for. One of the most important things to consider is choosing the right pram or pushchair.
Tandem prams (also known as 'in-line' double prams) are a classic style that have two seats or pram bassinets arranged side-by-side. The front seat, which is typically cushioned, reclines flat and is suitable for newborns. The second seat is a bit higher and is designed to accommodate toddlers as young as 3 years. Some models allow you to choose whether your children look at each other or outwards. Many tandems can be made into a single pushchair when your oldest child is no longer in need of the second seat.
A
tandem double stroller is less expensive than twin prams and can be an ideal choice for parents who wish to save money without compromising safety or functionality. A tandem can be heavy and difficult to steer, especially when negotiating curbs. It is also less stable than twin pushchairs especially when a bigger child is in the front. A tandem can be difficult to fit on public transport, and it may be difficult to navigate narrow roads.
The iCandy Peach is a popular image-conscious model that's a great choice for a single parent looking for a sleeker design, but the tandem mode can make it feel quite long and heavy when pushing. It has a clever frame that can be expanded to allow the addition of the second seat, and it can be used with multiple combinations of carrycots, buggy chairs and car seats (two at a time or in separate). The iCandy Wave tandem is another lightweight option that's easy-to-use and compatible with a range of car seats or carrycots.
Side by side
When it comes time to choose a
double buggy with car seat pram or pushchair there's a lot to consider. Whether you're buying for twins or siblings close in age there are plenty of configuration options to take into account. Tandem prams, also known as side-by-side prams, are a popular choices because they can be set up in a way that the infant is able to sit in the bassinet on top while the older child or toddler is seated in the second seat.
Certain models come with reversible seats that let you customize the layout of your family members throughout the toddler and baby years. This allows you to see your children at
All terrain Double buggy times and gives them the chance to interact while they walk.
Tandem prams are often jogging or all-terrain buggies, which means they're ideal for outdoor adventures and the park. They are also great for narrow aisles and checkouts in supermarkets and shops as they are smaller.
The Redsbaby JIVE3 pram for example, can be utilized in tandem mode from birth, with the addition of an Rumble seat. (PS249) When your child grows out of the rumble chair you can switch to a single pram mode. You may also opt to make use of the car capsule adaptors to convert it from a newborn to toddler travel system.
The Side by Side Pram made by Babybee is a different alternative. This double side-byside pram comes in a variety of colors and is designed in a contemporary design. It is designed to be used right from the moment of birth, you can choose to add the LUNA newborn cocoon (PS262) or the LUNA infant seats (PS53 each) to ensure your baby is comfortable and safe.
If you're looking for a sleek and elegant pushchair that can be converted into a side-byside
double stroller sale then the Egg 2 from Chicco is an excellent choice. It comes in a range of carrycots and infant seats to accommodate twins or siblings of different ages. It's also easy to collapse. It's also relatively lightweight making it an ideal choice for families with small cars or limited storage space.
Convertible
Some of the best
double pram pushchair pushchairs or prams can be configured into different seats to meet your needs as they change. It is possible to fit two toddlers in the seats or a third rider on the seat board and still have room for a basket to store your shopping, and the option to add additional accessories such as rain covers is a plus. Convertible double strollers are generally heavier and larger than single pushchairs because they need to hold two or more children. The Graco Modes Nest2Grow convertible is an example of a very affordable convertible that is easy to use. However, our test participants considered it to be somewhat heavy for the money.
Some convertible double strollers, like the Baby Jogger City Select 2, have a carrycot option which is suitable for newborns. This allows the double stroller to be compacted and reduce in size when it is not used. The City Select's clever, one-handed folding impressed our test subjects however it requires some practice. It is also quite fluid and agile, despite its size.
The Cybex Mockingbird single-to-double stroller is another affordable option. The seat can be transformed from a child-facing car seat to a forward-facing toddler seat. The bassinet-style mode makes it a great option for infants.
If you're looking for more flexibility look into a convertible with dual modes like the iCandy Peach. It's a compact double buggy that can fit two children side-by-side, but it can also be used as a tandem with the addition of a second seat kit and rider board. It's responsive and agile, and our testers liked its sleek design. It's not as light as some of the other pushchairs on our list however it does come with a large shopping basket which is ideal for parents with bags of toys and groceries.
Lightweight
Some parents prefer to secure their double buggy when they have one child and are expecting another so a convertible option is a great option. The iCandy Peach allows you to transform from a single to a double pushchair, with the addition of either a toddler seat or the brand's optional carrycot (which is suitable for sleeping at night). Our testers were pleased with how comfortable the seats are and love the fact that they both recline to different positions, feature built-in foot and leg supports and large UPF 50+ canopy that has peekaboo windows. The rear seat can also be elevated to provide a a standing platform for a child to climb off and on, so they can access items in the shopping basket.
The only downside to the iCandy Peach is that it is quite heavy, but Cher felt this was overcome by how easy it is to move around and how big the storage space is with two hanging parent and child cup holders as well as seat-back pockets, and a large underseat storage basket. Cher also loved that the seats can be turned so that they face each other. This is perfect for siblings who like to chat and have conversations while out and out and about.
The Delta Children LX Side-by-Side Stroller is a lighter option however, it is still awe-inspiring. It weighs only 18 pounds, is lightweight and features self-standing fold, making it easy to transport or store in your trunk. Parents are impressed by the quality of materials and workmanship, and the affordable cost. The only downside is that the seats don't recline as far as other models we've tested and the rear seat doesn't have great visibility due to its positioning - it's raised higher than the front seat.
Another popular choice is the Joolz Geo 3, which is slim sleek, stylish and easy to steer, with an appealing design and a lifetime guarantee. While they're smaller side-by-side prams may be wider than tandems and inline doubles. This makes them difficult to maneuver around busy footpaths and in shops. They are also smaller and therefore more maneuverable in tight spaces.
