Many of our beds for kids bunk are convertible to two twin beds in one, perfect if you plan to have your children move into their own bedrooms in the near future. Pick from finishes like brushed gray, creamy white and rich walnut.
Stairs or Ladders
When you are choosing a bunk bed for your kids you can choose to select between stairs or ladders. Ladders are more affordable and easy to install and provide an easy method of climbing into the top bunk. They are also more secure than stairs since they provide a greater area for children to walk on, and also have a handrail that is integrated. Ladders also tend to have grooves on the steps, which can prevent slippage while climbing up or down the bed.
If you like the design and appearance of stairs, then they can make a more elegant addition for your bunk bed. Staircases can also be used in rooms with limited space as they do not protrude like ladders. They can be made from wood or metal and are able to match a wide range of bedroom styles. Some staircases are equipped with storage drawers that are a great way to increase the size of bunk beds.
When deciding between a ladder and stairs, you should also consider the age of your child. While it is recommended no one sleep on the top bunk under the age of 6, children who are comfortable with climbing vertically may be better off with stairs instead of a ladder. Also when you're thinking of using your bunk bed as an extra bed for children or for adults with a mobility issues stairs are the most suitable choice.
A straight staircase that runs along the side of the bunk requires a minimum of 95" of space on each side. If you don't have enough space, you can choose an u-
l shaped bunk beds for kids staircase that does not require as much room but still allows you to reach the top bunk in a safe and safely. Some beds allow you to remove the stairs when they are not in use. This reduces the size of the bed and makes it more versatile for multipurpose spaces. You can also find stairs that connect to the top of the bed. This eliminates the need for separate handrails and makes it easier to climb up and to the bottom for children.
Guard Rails
Guard rails let children climb into and out of their beds independently, giving them the feeling of independence and confidence. But they must be positioned properly, making sure that there are no gaps or movement occurs between rails of the guard and bed frame. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines when installing guard rails and make sure to inspect them on a regular basis to ensure that they're not loose or have holes that could cause entrapment.
Keep bunk beds out of electrical appliances and other items that could be projectiles while your children are playing or sleeping. Also be sure to position bunks away from windows, which could be a danger to fall in the event that children climb on the top of the bed.
It is possible to install a nightlight on the ladder so that it can illuminate the steps up and down when your child awakes at night to use the bathroom, or are woken by an erupting storm and have to leave their bedroom.
Another excellent safety feature for bunks is a safety net that can be put up at the top to keep children from falling down while asleep or playing. This is a great idea for older children who may be more likely to sleep on the top bunk.
The guardrails must be securely attached to the bunk beds and cannot be removed without tools. The guardrail openings above the mattress foundation should not exceed 3.5 inches wide to prevent entrapment or strangulation. Place the wedge block as shown in Figure 1 in every opening in the uppermost guardrail member, and above the mattress foundation. Then apply a 33-lbf (147-N) force in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the largest end of the block, and maintain it for a period of 1 minute.
It is also recommended to teach children not to hang anything on the guardrails or ladder, like clothing, belts and sports equipment. Instead, a clothes rack is recommended to ensure that these items don't become a strangulation hazard for your child(ren). Also, ensure that more than one child should not sleep on the top floor of the bunk, since this could cause an unsafe imbalance that could result in falling.

Low-profile mattresses are typically the
best kids bunkbeds option for bunk beds for children. They are designed to be smaller than standard mattresses and increase the height of the safety rails for the top bunk. They also eliminate "filler" materials to offer the highest quality in an ultra-slim design.

These models can provide you with an idea of the longevity of the mattress as your child grows. You can also put in an extra bed skirt or mattress pad to stop it from sliding. Some beds even have an integrated lip or side rails to prevent this from happening.
