Replacing a Toyota Key
If your Toyota key fob has been damaged, there are a few different options available. If the internal electronics of your Toyota are in good working order, a service center can make a new key at less cost.
If the case is also broken, it will probably need to be replaced. If the case is intact, you can open it with its hidden key or using a thin pry tool to open the visible notch. Unlock the case, and then gently lift the circuit board to reveal the battery.

The blade of your Toyota key will inform you whether it is equipped with a transponder. The key is equipped with chips if it displays an encircling dot or dimple on one side or an "H" or a "G" marking. The key will not be marked or have a large bump on its top if it is not marked.

Smart Keys
Smart key technology may allow you to start your Toyota without needing to remove your keys from your pocket or purse. Smart keys also allow you to store your vehicle's settings for various drivers and remotely unlock windows or the sunroof. They may also include a feature that allows you to set limits on speed for your teenager when they are driving.
You must be within 10 feet of the vehicle to use the smart key. When you're within the required distance, the vehicle will activate courtesy lights and automatically open the driver's or passenger's door. Then, press the button on your key fob to unlock the trunk, too. Modern smart keys are equipped with a telescoping blade that can be adjusted to your various hand sizes and provide greater flexibility in reaching the ignition and lock buttons.
As with traditional car keys the smart key fob contains a transponder chip that sends out an encrypted signal when you press the lock or unlock buttons. It is designed to prevent thieves from using hot wires or taking your car away by turning off the engine immobilizer. This technology has some limitations. A thief with a technological advantage could use a scanning device to locate the code and transmit it to the key fob.
A smart key that is newer like the Mercedes Benz SmartKey uses a unique technique known as rolling code. A computer inside the vehicle is able to check the unique code each time you insert the key. This helps prevent unauthorized use, as it is difficult for the scanner to read the same rolling codes repeatedly.
Your smart key may be dead if the device doesn't respond to the lock and unlock buttons. The circuit board is easily removed from the majority of fobs to replace the battery. Take a photograph of the old battery, and make a note where the new battery will be placed in the case. This will allow you to assemble it correctly. Key Fob Battery Replacement
Change the battery on your key fob isn't nearly as difficult or time-consuming as it might sound. You can find replacement batteries from any major-box retailer or hardware stores. You can also buy batteries online. A new battery is not just cheap, but will also restore the original function of your key fob.
The first step is to take the key metal from the fob. There's typically a small metal button that is located just above the key part of the fob. To remove the key, press this button. Then, you need to disassemble the fob. This can be accomplished by pressing the small notch on the fob which looks like a keyhole or by inserting the flat tool into the smallest hole. After you've split the fob into two pieces that is, the front and the back, you can slide tools through the notch or small hole to access the battery compartment.
Look at the battery. It's likely to be silver and shaped in a circle. It should have a label on it that is a reference to the type of battery you'll need to

The first step is to find the Toyota key fob and determine whether the case has been damaged or not. If your key fob is damaged to the point of breaking, you will need to have it replaced by a dealer to have the transponder chip as well as other electronics programmed into your vehicle. This is more complex than replacing a key fob on its own. You will need to provide a photo ID, proof of ownership and the VIN of your car.
If your key fob is slightly damaged, you may be able to get an entirely new case using the existing electronic. This depends on how the key fob was damaged, such as by water or more serious physical damage. Typically, if the concealed key is not damaged, you can have a new one cut at an Toyota service center and then use it.
You can open the case of your key fob using an instrument that is flat such as a small screwdriver. Insert it into the slot or notch. After opening the case, you are able to lift the circuit board to reveal the battery. Do not force the case open because this could cause electronic components to fail. Remove the battery that was used and note the position of the battery in the case. This will help you make the correct replacement of the battery.
