1. Smeg BCC02
This sleek, compact, and striking machine, created by Milan-based firm Deep Design combines the brand's retro aesthetic with the latest technology. It takes care of every step of the coffee-making process, from grinding beans and tamping them into a puck to texturing milk and dispensing the correct volume - so you can create high-quality barista hot drinks by pressing the button.
The machine also has an elegant brushed aluminium front and is available in red, black or taupe, which means it's a great fit for the majority of kitchen designs. The machine does not come free of flaws, however. The majority of reviewers thought it was expensive for a cup to bean maker (and isn't equipped with a pitcher of milk).
There were many positive reviews about this machine's ease of use and the quality of its coffee. The digital display offers feedback and step-by-step directions throughout the entire process of brewing which will allow you to perfect your drink every time. The machine even allows you to adjust the grind size, in case that's not what you prefer. It's almost like having your own personal barista in your own home (minus Harry Potter's invisibility cloak, and Elon Musk's rocket-building abilities).
This model is perfect for those who like milky drinks. The steam wand can be adjusted to the right and left so that it fits most drinking vessels, with the exception of Viking drinking horns. We were also awed by the speed and efficiency at how the frothing was accomplished. It produces an amazing, full-flavoured espresso with a fantastic crema.
The BCC02 is an excellent all-rounder that's quiet, efficient and provides great value for money, especially at its current price of PS499. The only drawback is that it doesn't provide the same degree of customization as some of the other bean to cup models we've tried. It's got a 15-bar pump instead of the common 19 bar that aren't as efficient to make high-quality espressos. Other than that it's a great bean-to-cup machine for those who prefer their coffee strong and black.
