In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located near the edges of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also the location of the camshaft in order to activate the spark and injectors.
If this sensor fails the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several connector pins, and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should be reading about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge drop in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.
I'm not sure what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to find a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that must be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions regarding fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If you are experiencing issues with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to an engine shut down.
A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, or a misfire in the gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is they are very affordable and easily accessible, especially in the case of a Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of problems in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your
audi q3 key since it sends information to the ECU regarding how fast or slow the car's engine is turning. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other components of the car to be affected.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU then uses and processes this signal to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection on pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is the same across the
replacement key audi 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du So, you may find some good ones in wrecking yards.
