You can obtain a group A1 driving licence at the age of 16 (in Denmark and Malta, 15; in Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Italy, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia 14). When you reach the age of 16, you need to pass the motorbike test under the category A2. You must pass the test before you turn 18. After two years you can be upgraded to category A.
After passing the test in category A2, you can drive a motorcycle with or without a sidecar as well as three-wheeled vehicles that have a power of up to 35 kW. They must also have a weight/power ratio of not more than 0.2 kg/kW and cannot be made from a vehicle with twice the power of the maximum.
If you have passed the two-part test for a moped or motorcycle that is lower in class from the 1st July 1996, you may skip the theory test and only take the practical exam. You can either ride a small scooter or moped equipped with L plates, or obtain the new AM licence which allows you to ride bikes up to 50cc with a top-speed of 45mph. The AM licence will only be valid if you have taken the test in your theory and have completed nine hours of instruction divided into theory and practical lessons at an instructor at a driving school.
Vehicles with four wheels
This category includes all motorized vehicles that have four wheels, except for passenger cars and buses. It also includes utilitarian vehicles such as pickups, panels and vans. Motorhomes, campers, and lorries are also included. This category could also include vehicles like ambulances, hearses and carryalls that are designed to accommodate more than eight passengers or have a maximum authorised mass of 500 kg. After passing the theory test you will have to take a road test test on public and private roads. After you have passed both of these, you will receive a request for a driving license. You will need to present this request to the local authority within three years of passing your practical test.
Once you have passed your driving test, it's possible to begin driving vehicles that fall in the category of A2. In some countries, if you've been holding a full A1 licence for two years, you will not require an additional driving test to get a category A2 license that permits you to drive motorcycles up to 35 kW. This allows you to learn on less powerful two-wheelers before upgrading to more powerful machines.
