Cylinder locks are commonly found on uPVC doors, but they can be utilized on other types of door. They work by using a key to unlock a cylinder that will reveal pins that can be aligned with the pins in the lock body, allow them to rotate the cam, thereby opening the door. Euro cylinders can be fitted with up to six pins with both internal and external doors generally requiring different levels of security.
The selection of a cylinder is essential. It is based on the type of use your doors and handles will receive. External doors, for example are required to be fitted with cylinders with greater security, whereas internal doors can be secured using the standard cylinder. Additionally, certain cylinders come with additional features which can enhance security, for instance anti-drill and anti-bump characteristics.
A euro cylinder needs to be measured correctly to ensure that it is the correct size for your door. The cylinder must be measured from the screw hole at the center to the ends of the cylinder. This includes the thumb turn in the event that one is present. It is best to do this while the lock is in place however if this is not possible, you can remove it to measure. It is essential to avoid having a cylinder that extends beyond the handle or escutcheon. This could make it susceptible to lock snapping attacks.
Most newer cylinders have been made with anti-drill and bump resistance features included in their design. These features are designed to minimize the risk of attack by forcing the cylinder rotate in a different direction. This can to deflect an attack and protect your door.
There are also cylinders designed to resist snapping. This is a common occurrence on cylinders. A specially designed tool is used to break the break line of the lock and then the front of cylinder is snapped off. This is a quicker and simpler method to gain access than using a multipoint locking system. It also leaves less evidence of the break-in which can make it difficult to prove insurance claims.
Spring Cassette
The spring cassette is located in the base of the door handle backplate providing a sprung solution to return the multipoint lock handles back to their normal position after use. The handles had no spring, and would slide when the locking mechanism was removed. The addition of this simple element is one of the most effective ways to fix this and it is also a great way to prevent your doors made of upvc from becoming stuck in either closed or open position, as they aren't always simple to close manually.
These spring cassettes were designed to be used with a sprung multipoint lock. They will not fit handles that aren't sprung and you'll need to cut a hole in the backplate to allow them to fit.
