Item upgrades are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.

Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specified amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's base stats increase when it is upgraded. This is the sum of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). The cost of upgrading items can be high dependent on the upgrader and the kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the number of perks that have to be changed in order to upgrade an item.

It can also be used as a gating requirement when queueing for raids, dungeons and scenarios. It can also be used to limit how much PvP gear players can use, since PvP is limited at lower levels. Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.

When deciding whether to purchase or sell equipment, players can compare the level of an item. It's a sign of the damage and its quality. Comparing items in a vendor's stock is possible using the item's level.

On your PC, you can view the item level by pressing ALT or using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will show the full item description, including its ilvl. It is also accessible by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories about how the item level is calculated. One theory is that the level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It takes into account the fact that various perks have different value and sockets have gems that increase the item's overall value. This can result in an item's ilvl calculated, which is typically very close to Blizzard's actual level of the item.

This isn't the only thing that affects the level of an item. The degree of the area in which the item dropped can also alter its stats. For instance it can increase the item's haste, or crit rating. Items that drop in higher-level instances will have a higher value.

Item Stats

The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a variety of them in various ways to encourage players to play with multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are increased by the weapon's stat mods, which are themselves increased by the player's skill.

Upgrades to the item add by increasing certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines the upgrade cost. For example, a grey or white item will only be upgraded once, while an item with the rare tiers will be upgraded several times at higher prices.

Another way to change the stats of an item is to use affixes. They are stat boosts that can be added by the player to an item. The affixes can be used to provide items with extra damage or special capabilities (such as reviving dead or reducing cooling downs), or to make them unique by naming them.

All affixes are re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window, and pressing the green button. This procedure will cost the player a specific amount of gold and items that can be used to add to the upgrade gauge in the same manner as other options for rerolling.

In addition to rerolling affixes, players can select which stats to keep on an item after it is upgraded. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's an exclusive item or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

This is another aspect that could be altered by adding the option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes or choosing which stats to increase. But as with base equipment, this would have to be done on a per-item basis and the interface for item comparison will not show all the stats that could be either lost or gained at the same time.

Item Luck

A player's Luck stat stacks up to increase the odds of item discoveries and the properties that are spawned from loot drops and the intensity of those properties. It does not, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players a chance to acquire better gear in earlier waves and is therefore more useful in early game runs than in later ones, since most players prefer higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.

In addition to influencing the discovery of items, Luck also increases the chance of success when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each level of the item. These can also be enhanced by using anti-materials, such as the Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be made or spawn by using the Luck property, which has a default value of 40. These items can be enhanced by golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant an additional +40 Luck or to boost the luck of an item up to 140.

Additionally, certain items, like the Hollow infused weapon, can be equipped to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items can be purchased in the shop, or they can be crafted using the right ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are costly and not every upgrade will be successful. However, there are cash shop items that allow players to increase their chances of success or even prevent themselves from losing an item in the event that the upgrade fails.

The success rate of an upgrade can be seen in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the chance of successfully upgrading the item and can be enhanced by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The chance of success can only be increased by so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The luck of an item can affect the success of an upgrade item. All items have an average success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the items in the inventory therefore enchantment glints and other effects can be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
