It also leaves the floors spotless. Its price is surprisingly low and high-end features (such as dirt detection) are pluses.

Be sure to regularly examine the brushes of your robot for hair that is tangled as well as large debris and clean them as required. Some models will also empty the dust bin on board and then deposit it in an additional bin located at the base. This can reduce the amount of fine dust that gets released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 Pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They feature motors that are top-of-the quality and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model), they use intelligent mapping to design precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like cords and furniture legs. The robots also come with a feature called Carpet Boost that boosts its power when it senses dirt on the carpet.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests of floors with no carpet, and they are particularly adept in cleaning dog hair. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our first option. For instance, the Q5's navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance which means it's susceptible to get caught up in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate tight spaces very well in our tests. Also, it doesn't have cameras that let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a good deal particularly if your office or home has a lot of unfinished flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also extremely quiet and can be used while you're at work or at school. The only thing it's missing that you won't find in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. And it's less effective at mopping, as it relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stay on very well and can't handle dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. And, if you have to, you can switch the mopping pad for dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into a sleek, compact package. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features a self-emptying dustbin as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, but it's not as good as other hoovers in terms of deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and autonomous vacuum combination makes use of advanced sensors to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it will learn your home's layout over time for more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to set up zones and modify the cleaning schedule. It comes with a battery life that is similar to other models.

When the X30 Ultra is in a carpeted area, you can instruct it to pull back and extend its mops. This helps prevent cross contamination. The flex arm is ideal for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. However, it doesn't have the same level of washboard performance as our other Editors' Choice picks, the Ecovacs Deebot Ozmo N8 Pro+ as well as the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop in the market to clean the entire house with only 66 percent of its battery left. It also did a great job cleaning a range of rooms and floors with various flooring types, such as some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was superb and it stayed clear of fake dog turds and socks, shoes and bundles cables.

It's a little more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after vacuuming, a feature that we've not seen on other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

This mop and vacuum combination has a sleek, circular look that looks more like the regular Roomba model than the bulky models of the competitors. It is one of our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is its most advanced model, with features that are cutting-edge like Enhanced Dirt Detection Technology as well as future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that can autonomously wash mop pads).

It's also the only robot vacuum or mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured lighting system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an industry-leading 12,000Pa suction and self-cleaning mop pads.

The X40 as with other iRobot products, is easy to operate. It comes with an intuitive mobile app interface that integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only issue is that it's an eerily noisy device, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work or at night as you try to sleep.

It's also quite expensive, but it's not as pricey as the Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra, both of which are equally powerful and look better. This is a two-in-one automatic vacuum cleaner that's very capable however it's going to cost you more and create more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a variety of sophisticated features that let you get rid of your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning device, similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It comes with a multi-function dock that will automatically emptys the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, as well as washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floorplans and identify obstacles. It is more efficient in its navigation than its premium competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards but this was not foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to get the job done. It also comes with a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for different areas in the house based on how dirty those areas are.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose models with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one particular area of your house by using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be useful if you have a lot furniture. Finally, a recharge and resume feature that lets your robot vacuum continue where it left off is ideal for busy families.

iRobot RX3

The RX3 is a robotic cleaner and mop with more intelligence than you would expect from its price tag. It has a great vacuuming performance, picking up 55% debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other mop cleaners for robots we've tested. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured application and an auto-emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping session that collects data about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, set up an area for cleaning or to prioritize your most filthy rooms to improve performance. The app has a range of features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.

It is also able to reach corners and under furniture better because its shape is more rectangular. It also has a strong 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. It also has the ability to create a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a sleeker and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive design, akin to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute eyes. It does a great job vacuuming, but it is more likely to be caught on low thresholds. It is also noisier than other top robot vacuums we have examined. It also comes with an app that's less intuitive and has a tiny base station that doesn't double as a bin to empty.
