Narwal Freo X Ultra
A top-rated, highly-functional Gen 4 robot vacuum and mop that adopts a new approach to design and functionality, the Freo X Ultra is a well-made machine. The price of $1,400 is a bit steep however, you can find it on sale frequently enough to make the purchase more acceptable. The unit looks stunning and the base occupies very small space in the corner of your home.
The design of this machine addresses some of the issues we've experienced with other
robotic floor scrubber mops and vacuum units, including brushes that get tangled up in hair and the vacuum brush not being able enough to reach the flooring underneath furniture. The sweeping performance is also impressive on carpets and bare flooring. The vacuum/mop unit has an excellent level of debris pickup and the mop can soak up floors that are not soiled.
The mops have a sophisticated system that cleans the edges of walls, and around furniture. The robot is able to easily get around obstacles such as toys, food bowls and backpacks. It could get caught or get stuck with smaller, more compact objects like shoelaces, USB cable, and pen.
This robot was used to vacuum and mop hardwood flooring FLOR carpet tiles, as well as pile rugs in a huge open-plan home. With FREO Mind enabled, it vacuumed and mopped a 90m2 area in just 170 minutes, which is close to the average for Gen 4.
A number of features set this robot apart from other models in its class. The Freo X Ultra has a slew of software, sensor and hardware improvements designed to keep it at the top of its class. It has declared autonomy of 3.5 hours for environments of up to 260m2.
You can customize multiple features of the Freo app, including the frequency at which the robot comes back to the base station, its mopping frequency and power (silent or smart), and its mopping humidity. The app can also detect heavily soiled areas and devise a streamlined cleaning route, as well as dispense detergent or raise the carpet's pads.
Other noteworthy features include an easy-to read display on the robot's bottom and an access door for docks that is convenient to open. The Freo X Ultra vacuum and mop is a great choice for home and apartment owners who wish to cut down on chores and keep their homes tidy.
Miele Scout RX3
Miele is no slouches in the robot vacuuming world and is renowned for quality and innovation. The new Miele robot is designed to take that to the next level by incorporating smart features and top-notch cleaning performance.
The RX3 has dual suction, intelligent navigation with 3D mapping and a camera that transmits a live image to your smartphone for effortless control. The powerful four-stage cleaning system offers excellent dust pickup on hard and carpet flooring, while the intuitive swing-out side brushes and dual suction channels remove dust from corners. Its 8.5 cm height lets it get under furniture that is low. Front cameras and an infrared sensor assist in navigating barriers, thresholds and obstacles with ease.
The Scout RX3 impressed us in our test of how well it cleaned baking powder near baseboards and corners. Its 2,500Pa suction was weaker than the other robots, however it was still very silent and moved swiftly. It didn't mop, however, and its removable cleaning pads were fiddly to attach and didn't deal with dirt that had dried on.
Its app is a little on the basic side, lacking advanced features like multiple cleaning modes and automated scheduling. It works with Alexa but its voice controls don't seem to be very clear or responsive. It's also a bit sporadic when it returns to the charging station after an exercise. Other robots can follow an obstruction or follow the previous route however, the RX3 is a mess until it gives up.
We also encountered issues with the smart features of the device, namely its mapping feature as well as digital stay-out zones. It was good at keeping our furniture legs and shoes away however it could easily get hanging up on cables, socks and rug. We decided not to include the Scout RX3 on our Best Buy list. With a decent price and a dazzling performance it's a Scout RX3 is worth considering when you're looking for an alternative to traditional uprights.
