World of Warcraft - Item Upgrading

The upgrade option allows players to boost the gear rating of an item upgrade up 700 points, and then add a bonus. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items are worth upgrading because of their unique stats. (For example an excellently rolled breakpoint armor used in melee PvP). Other items like weapons aren't changed much after an upgrade and aren't worth the cost.

Weapons

Upgrades to weapons can improve their numerical stats, like attack damage, crit chance, and PvE/PvP damage. Weapons also come with an unchanging bonus that increases the damage they deal per second. In addition there are many weapons with a set bonus which is activated when three or more of the same weapon is present on a single unit. A weapon's upgrade costs depend on the quality of the weapon and its current level. For example, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones needed to upgrade a weapon will continue increase until it is required to use an upgrade to a higher level of Smithing Stones, at which point it will reset to one.

Upgrades to weapons also reroll the stats of the base. While this is usually an excellent thing however, it could have negative consequences too. Upgrades can make items impossible to use, unless you are exceptionally lucky.

The ability to upgrade armor items to improve their performance. For instance, if you have chests or helms this will increase the defense of its base, while gloves and belts will increase their strength and dexterity. Armor offers a rerolling option for its Enhanced Defense%. This means that it may roll down to a lower value.

For instance the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, allowing you to keep pace with a large group of enemies in most cold climates, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded to +20 defense, giving you enough protection to withstand an entire raid with a handful of friends.

It isn't possible to upgrade armor in the same way as weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior, you should focus on upgrading your armor to increase physical power or spell power. It's also worth saving your armor upgrades for armor you'll be wearing at the end of the game, such as the Ring of Lightning and Spectral Shield or the helmet you'll wear for the final boss battle and the Monter Parts Merchant's mask.

Players should upgrade their most essential items first.
