The economic crisis that swept Asia forced a major reappraisal of the old system of government-business alliances and the management by the public of private risks. In Korea this meant a change in the development paradigm.

The crisis has revealed the shortcomings of the country's economic policies, including its excessive dependence on foreign investment and exports which might not be sustainable over the long term.

The crisis has shaken the confidence of investors. This means that the government must rethink its strategy and find other ways to boost the domestic demand. It must also overhaul the incentive, monitoring, and disciplining systems currently in place to ensure the stability of the financial system. 4. Evolution and Education

A new publication from the NRC provides guidance to schools about how to integrate evolution into the life science curriculum.

Multiple studies have shown that a more thorough explanation of evolution can lead to a greater understanding of students and belief in the concept of evolution. It is difficult to estimate the causal effects of evolution in the classroom, since school curricula don't change in a random manner and are dependent on the timing of state board of education and gubernatorial election. To overcome this problem I employ a longitudinal data set that allows me to account for state and year fixed effects as well as individual-level variations in teacher beliefs about the evolution of their curriculum.

Another important result is that teachers who feel more comfortable teaching about evolution report having fewer personal barriers to doing so. This is in line with the hypothesis that more confident faculty are less likely to be hesitant about evolution-related topics in the classroom, and could be more inclined to use strategies like a reconciliatory method known to increase the acceptance of undergraduate students of evolution.
